The reading in Zagorje in February 1926 shows that Kosovel, influenced by his friends and because of a deep inner sense of justice (which he expounded reading poetry of Rabindranath Tagore), on the one hand, and due to the need to create an up-to-date poetry which could hit the essence of authentic, aesthetic and ethical functions of speech, on the other hand, examined a variety of opportunities to act as poetic words, often descending into "the poetics of the working or socially engaged," as Anton Ocvirk defined it. However, in my opinion in the workers' or socially engaged poems of Srečko Kosovel did not pierce the wall separating the inner, "from their" built from universal art, poetry, classical patterns of hierarchical representation (political party program). He was successful in that phase called the Constructivist Avant-garde. Through constructivist poetry, he did not only join in the aesthetic and revolutionary upheaval that swept Europe after the turn of the century and strengthened during the First World War and after, and which undoubtedly meant a broad social front and outspoken social and political resistance against the "old art" and "old world ", which is the reason for direct involvement of artists in the political movements of his time, but has also created its own system and his own poetic, radical political poetry. Only the "konses" are an exceptional example of a successful political poetry, "resulting in most of herself."

(A fragment of the essay by dr. Iztok Osojnik Political Truth of  Kosovel’s Avantgarde Constructivist poetry)

This selection of poems gives Polish readers opportunity to meet an outstanding personality of Srečko Kosovel – a Slovenian poet, who died in 1926, at age of 22. Less than twenty of his poems have been published in Poland until now, fifteen of them in anthologies of Slovene poetry: two poems are repeated (Labodja pesem, O, saj ni smrti), in an anthology selected and edited by Marian Piechal in 1967, and in the anthology by Katarina Šalamun Biedrzycka entitled Silver and moss (Mah in srebro/Srebro i mech) in 1995. This bilingual edition rose from a desire to present Kosovel’s work which was not affected by the degrading power of time, although it long remained in hiding; it is still current and diverse; it can be read both historically (facts to which they relate) and from nowadays perspective; they are having the universal and local, journalistic, philosophical and ethical values. The book is a result of the Slovenian-Polish cooperation. Consequently, the image of Srečko Kosovel has been created in two reading perspectives – Slovenian and Polish – in order to maintain author’s relative independence, exposed in the translation to appropriation by the target culture, also to allow his poetry to have a double life in the source culture and the target culture through the prism of different experience of place and time.
Kosovel’s phenomenon lies in the fact that – in spite of belonging to the historical Avant-garde – his poetry is understandable to contemporary readers because he asked questions and had doubts about poetry, poet, human condition, cultural, ethical and aesthetic values.

(From an essay by Professor Dr. Bożena Tokarz Poet in the world of things)

Srečko Kosovel (1904–1926) was a poet, essayist, journalist; one of the most important Slovenian artists of the 20th century. He studied Slavic and Roman Studies and Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana. His works were published in numerous magazines and literary recited at meetings. He died of meningitis at the age of twenty-two years, before he could issue his debut poetry collection The Golden Boat (Zlati čoln). Most of his work was published posthumously, the most innovative texts (the konses and integrals) were not published until 1967 (edited by Anton Ocvirk). Kosovel’s poems, falling in the avant-garde art direction, such as Constructivism, Dadaism, Futurism, and Surrealism, still have a significant impact on contemporary Slovenian art. His wish to give humanity back the rank of the highest value, is not fading nowadays.
